Description
Sidnal Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse that was partly remodeled in the mid-19th century, with later additions and alterations. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill and some red brick rebuilding, topped with a slate roof. The building has a T-plan layout with a lean-to addition at the northeast corner. It is one storey and an attic high, with two storeys at the rear gable.
The framing is visible on the gabled rear range and the back wall of the main range, featuring large rectangular panels with long straight tension braces. The rear gable has a collar and tie-beam truss supported by four vertical struts. The front of the house has two windows, which are late 20th-century casements with 19th-century segmental heads on either side of a contemporary gabled brick and glass porch. Above the porch, there are gabled eaves dormers, and there are external red brick end stacks, with the top of the left stack rebuilt in late 20th-century brick.
Inside, the timber frame is exposed on the back wall, the cross wall of the main range, and the gabled rear range. The interior features chamfered spine beams with straight-cut stops and heavy joists in the two main ground-floor rooms. The single-purlin roof in two bays has a central collar and tie-beam truss with V-struts extending from the collar. Late 20th-century additions set back to the right are not of special architectural interest.
