Description
Upper Gwarthlow Farmhouse is a farmhouse that underwent early 19th century remodeling, likely of a 17th century house, with later additions and alterations. It features red brick that probably conceals or replaces a timber frame in the main section, topped with a graded slate roof. The building has a baffle-entry plan with a 19th century extension to the front on the right. It is two storeys high with a dentilled eaves cornice and a three-window front, with the entrance situated between the two right-hand windows. The late 19th century casements on the ground floor have segmental heads, as does the entrance, which features a four-panel door. There is a ridge stack directly above with a moulded capping and an external end stack to the left. At the rear, there is a small timber framed lean-to, likely from the 19th century. The interior could not be inspected during the re-survey in October 1985, but it is reported to have chamfered ceiling beams. The farmhouse is included for its group value.
