Description
Rockley Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of red brick in random and English bond patterns, set on a chamfered plinth that was repaired in the 18th century and later. The roof is covered with machine tiles. The building has a U-shape, featuring gabled wings at each end to the south and an inner brick lean-to attached.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics and has a window arrangement of 1:2:1. The mid-20th century casements are present, with a blocked segmental arch on the ground floor of the left wing. The right wing contains an infilled 2-light wooden mullion window on the first floor and the remains of a similar window below. The left lean-to, which forms a porch, has a segmental outer arch and a massive nail-studded plank door framed by a double ovolo-moulded surround, with benches on either side.
Prominent features include a tall red brick stack on the front wall next to the right lean-to, two external lateral stacks on the left gable, and another external lateral stack on the right gable. The rear of the building has a massive external stack with three partly rebuilt rebated diagonal shafts. There is a gabled staircase projection on the left, featuring close-set vertical posts and the position of a former window at the top. The rear wall of the right gable has been completely rebuilt in mid-20th century brick.
Inside, the farmhouse features chamfered ceiling beams with straight-cut and ogee stops, and timber-framed cross walls with square panels on the ground and first floors. Most rooms on the first floor have square oak panelling, accented with Ionic pilasters in the corridor. A wide oak spiral staircase with a massive newel rises from the ground floor to the attic.
