Description
Brompton Hall is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 17th century but includes parts of an earlier building. It was remodeled in the late 18th century and extended in the late 19th century, with further additions and alterations. The front is roughcast, which probably conceals a timber frame, while the rear is finished in painted rubblestone. The building features red brick additions and slate roofs, which are consistent with the 17th-century part. The structure has a complex building sequence, with a gable at the center of the 17th-century section that may be from an earlier structure. The left gable of the prominent late 19th-century addition on the right also seems to incorporate some earlier work. The 17th-century part has two storeys, while the 19th-century addition has two storeys and an attic. There are three windows in the 17th-century section, all of which are 20th-century casements, except for the gable which has a 19th-century casement. An external end stack on the left has a red brick shaft and features a large rounded rubblestone bread oven with a conical slate cap. There is also a large red brick stack at the right gable end, where it joins the 19th-century addition. This addition has two gables on the front and a two-storey canted bay between, with late 19th-century casements throughout. Inside, the left gable of the late 19th-century part has chamfered ceiling beams with straight-cut stops, suggesting that this section is a remodelling rather than newly built at that time.
