Description

The structure is a wall with the remains of a pulpit, located approximately 10 metres east of Convent Lodge. The wall dates back to 1821, while the pulpit is believed to be from around 1765 and was designed by 'Capability' Brown. The wall is made of squared and coursed sandstone and features an ashlar pulpit. It is approximately 40 metres long and 1.5 metres high.

The wall includes two groups of triple quatrefoiled segmental-arched niches with carved spandrels, as well as eight carved square panels depicting a butterfly, flower, mitre, crown, circle with cross, and shields. There are alternating pierced Latin and St. Andrew's crosses. The left-hand end pier and about 6 metres of the wall have collapsed, leaving pieces on the ground, including a square panel with a carved flower. The right-hand end pier was removed along with gates, gatepiers, and flanking walls from around 1765 to Marston Road, Wolverhampton in the late 1970s.

The remains of the central octagonal wall pulpit have a chamfered base and a carved rosette at the foot, though its superstructure has collapsed and is in pieces on the ground in front and behind the wall. A 19th-century illustration shows a serpent-shaped coping at the base of the pulpit, which is not visible in the collapsed remains. A similar structure existed on a wall in Tong Norton until its removal around 1890; both pulpits were likely inspired by the early 14th-century refectory pulpit at St. Mary's Abbey in Shrewsbury.
