Description
The wall and gatepier located to the north and northwest of the Church of St Michael is approximately 150 meters long and dates from the 18th and 19th centuries, though its exact origin is uncertain. The structure is made of squared stone and brick, featuring ashlar elements. The footings of the wall are primarily visible as squared stone, with the lower part constructed from 18th-century brick and the upper part from early 19th-century brick, topped with chamfered ashlar coping. The angle and most of the wall to the northwest are from the mid to late 19th century, built on stone footings. At the west end, there is an ashlar gatepier with stop-chamfered angles, a cornice adorned with acanthus moulding, and a cap featuring a pine finial. The entrance to the north of the church tower has a round-headed opening with a cornice and an urn base above it, along with a rebate and pegs for a gate on the north side. The eastern end, approximately 15 meters long, is a 20th-century rebuild. This site was originally home to the Augustinian Priory of SS Mary and Wulfad, founded around 1135.
