Description

The wall located to the south and southwest of the Church of St Michael is approximately 48 meters long along the south side of the churchyard. It returns about 75 meters north along the boundary of the Mansion House, extends east for approximately 19 meters to the south side of the Granville burying ground, and then returns about 45 meters north and approximately 31 meters west along the boundary of The Priory. The origin of the wall is uncertain, but it has been rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of coursed squared stone and brick, featuring ashlar. The lower part of the wall is made of 18th-century brick, while the upper part consists of early 19th-century brick with chamfered ashlar coping. The section along the boundary of The Priory is built on stone footings, and the part along the boundary of the Mansion House has chamfered brick coping. The central section is lower and made of coursed squared stone, with a 20th-century gate at the east end. This site was originally home to the Augustinian Priory of SS Mary and Wulfad, which was founded around 1135.
