Description

Bellan House School, originally a house, dates from the late 18th century and has undergone later additions and alterations. It is built of red brick on a rendered stone plinth, topped with a graded slate roof that is partly hidden by an eaves parapet. The building has three storeys above a basement, featuring a moulded stone eaves cornice and painted cill and floor bands, the latter adorned with fluted decoration. The façade has a 3:1:3 window arrangement, with the outer windows having slightly projecting pediments and two-storey canted bays. The glazing consists of glazing bar sashes and plate-glass sashes with gauged heads, except for the first- and second-floor centre windows, which have a segmental-pedimented head and a moulded stone surround, respectively. The central entrance boasts a stone Ionic doorcase with four demi-columns and a projecting dentilled pediment supported by two similar columns. It features a panelled door with vertical sidelights and is accessed by a flight of six steps. Attached to the building are wrought-iron railings on a low stone wall, which have pointed finials and urn-capped standards, with 19th-century railings replacing those to the left of the steps. At the rear, there are two-storey service ranges positioned at right angles.
