Description

Newell House School, including the forecourt walls, railings, and gates, is located on the east side of Cornhill and dates back to the 17th century. The west end of the house has its origins in the 17th century and originally featured two projecting wings at the front, creating a small court. The easternmost wing has been incorporated into a newer 19th-century block. The older section has hipped roofs that were once covered with stone slates but are now finished with plain tiles. It includes one dormer with a segmental head and a doorway with a moulded architrave, a four-panelled door, and a rectangular fanlight.

The front of the building features six original stone mullioned windows, with those on the first floor still retaining lead glazing. The walls are made of coursed rubble, and the south-facing side has one four-light and one five-light stone mullioned window. The new addition to the east is taller and appears to be from the 19th century, with a roughcast finish, a stone plinth, and a stone slate roof. The east front consists of five windows, two storeys high, with a basement and attic. It has an ashlar parapet and cornice, with sash windows that do not have glazing bars. The central round-headed doorway is topped with a pediment supported by console brackets.

Inside the older wing, there is a fireplace featuring a four-centred arch. The forecourt wall, railings, and gates at the front on Cornhill are from the 19th century. The stone wall is complemented by railings with uprights that have spiked finials, and the gates feature uprights that alternate in height. Square standards with coved finials are placed at intervals along the railings.
