Description

The Old School is a building that was originally a school and is now a house. It dates back to 1624 and was extended in the 19th century. The structure is made of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a Collyweston stone slate roof. The original block has a coped gable with ball finials and a moulded stone end stack from the 19th-century addition. It is a single-storey building with quoins.

The entrance is located on the left side of the original block, featuring a door made of three wide boards set in a moulded stone architrave, which may have been reset. Above the door is a tablet inscribed with: "A . FREE . SCHOOLE . FOR / WEEKLEY . AND . WRECKTON / FOUNDED BY . NICOLAS . LATHAM / CLERKE . PARSON . OF . BARNEWELL / S . ANDREW TO . TEACH . THEIRE / CHILDREN . TO . WRITE . AND . READE / ANNO DOMINI : 1624". To the right of the entrance is a four-light stone-mullioned window that has an ovolo moulding, a king mullion, and a casement-moulded cornice.

The rest of the original front is altered by the addition, but there are three-light stone-mullioned windows with cornices at the gable ends—ovolo-moulded on the north side and chamfered on the south. The 19th-century wing has an ovolo-moulded window on the north side and a chamfered window on the south. The projecting wing towards the street features a three-light chamfered mullioned window with a transom and cornice in the gable end, along with two three-light chamfered mullioned windows with cornices on the south flank. The interior has not been inspected.
