Description
Montagu Hospital is a former almshouse, now a house, dated 1611. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a Collyweston stone slate roof, featuring a coped gablet and moulded stone end stacks. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical four-window range.
The central entrance is Tudor-headed and is set beneath a classical entablature that projects forward on brackets at either end, supporting ornate obelisks. There is a frieze inscribed with "WHAT.THOU.DOEST.DO.YT.IN.FAYTH". The entrance features a wide-boarded studded door on strap hinges. Above the door, the Montagu arms are displayed in a scrolly cartouche decorated with strapwork. Above this is a painted sundial dated 1631, which includes the carved date of 1611. The centrepiece is topped with an elaborate curved gable that has kneelers and obelisk finials, along with a central circular blind panel.
A casement-moulded string course runs above the ground floor windows, and the first floor is recessed above a chamfered set-off. The windows are ovolo-moulded stone-mullioned with rectangular-leaded casements, consisting of a 2-light and a 4-light on each floor flanking the central feature. There is also a sundial on the south gable end. The interior has not been inspected.
