Description
Thornes Memorial is a chest tomb located approximately one metre south of the chancel of the Church of St Michael. It dates from 1828 and is made of dressed yellow and grey sandstone. The tomb has a sarcophagus shape, featuring a base with a moulded plinth, a cavetto-moulded cornice, battered sides, and a chamfered top with panelled ends and antefixae. It includes recessed panels and is inscribed with the following text: "In Memory of/the Revd. WILLIAM THORNES/the much respected Vicar/of this Parish/for upwards of fifty years/he died Sept. 5th 1828/aged 77". The memorial likely also includes post-dated inscriptions for his wife Elizabeth, who died in 1796, his daughter Elizabeth, who died in 1827, and his son the Revd. John Thornes, who died in 1813, located to the north, west, and east sides respectively.
