Description
The Thorne memorial is a chest tomb located approximately 26 metres south of the chancel of the Church of All Saints in North Molton. It dates from 1777 and 1821 and is made of sandstone. The tomb features a moulded cornice on its flat top. The west side bears an inscription dedicated to Michael Thorne, who died on 7th January 1777 at the age of 71, and his wife, Mary. The north side has an inscription for Joseph Thorne, who died on 11th May 1821 at the age of 69, and his wife, Mary. The south side includes a poetic inscription that reads: "Two tender Parents in one Grave lie) / Whose chiefest care in life was Heaven to Gain./Hence they the Peaceful Paths of Virtue trod:/And with united fervour serv'd their God. To follow them - their Offspring Try/And learn like them to live to live like them to Die."
