Description

This is a house, originally one dwelling, later divided into two properties at 17 and 17A East Castle Street, Bridgnorth. The core of the building dates to the 18th century, with a rainwater head dated 1768, and it was extended around the mid-19th century, alongside later 19th and 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a plain tile roof that features gable and hipped sections. Brick axial and lateral stacks are also present.

The building is arranged in an L-shape. Number 17 has a central entrance hall with a room on either side. Number 17A is a mid-19th century wing, designed in the Georgian style and projecting to the south.

The west front of number 17 is symmetrical, three bays wide, and two storeys with an attic. It has four-pane sash windows with rusticated stone surrounds incorporating keyblocks and a first-floor cill course. A central doorway has pilasters, an entablature, a rectangular overlight and a fielded six-panel door. Narrow windows were added in the 19th century, flanking the doorway. Three pedimented dormers with casements are set into the roof. Number 17A is a two-storey wing projecting to the right. It has similarly styled windows with a cill course, one blind window on each floor to the street, a 20th-century doorway on the north side, and a three-bay south side with a two-storey canted bay projection on the right. A rainwater head dated 1768 is located at the rear of the building.

The interior has not been inspected.
