Description
The cowhouse, located approximately 60 metres south of Lower Aldress Farmhouse, dates from the late 17th century and has undergone some alterations. It features a weatherboarded timber frame with corrugated iron cladding on the west side and a stone slate roof. The building has two levels, with four eaves hatches and five doors on the east side. Inside, there are vertical posts and light framing, including re-used jowled posts, as well as weatherboarded partitions with long straight tension braces and a continuous loft. The roof is a double-purlin structure in four bays, incorporating a mix of Queen-strut trusses and raking struts from tie beams that support the principal rafters. This cowhouse is included for its group value, although Lower Aldress Farmhouse itself is not listed.
