Description
Old Smithy is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates back to the 14th or 15th century and was remodeled in the 17th century and late 18th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble and is rendered on the front and gable ends, topped with a slate roof that is graded towards the front. The original layout featured an open hall, likely consisting of three cruck-framed bays, which was floored in the 17th century, and the eaves were raised in the late 18th century.
The structure is two stories tall and features late 20th-century windows, with three casements located directly below the eaves on the first floor. On the ground floor, there is one window to the left and one in the center, with a contemporary six-panel door to the right. An external end stack is located to the left, which has a late 20th-century rendered lean-to attached, and there is a ridge stack to the left of the entrance.
Inside, the main ground-floor room has two deep-chamfered spine beams with flat heavy joists. There are two inglenook fireplaces with chamfered wooden lintels beneath the ridge stack. One true cruck truss with a cambered collar is exposed in the first bay from the left, and one cruck blade is visible in the second bay. The apexes of both trusses were not inspected at the time of the resurvey in November 1985, but it is said that they survive in the roof space. Additionally, another cruck truss is believed to be hidden beneath the render on the left gable end, and parts of another are thought to have been removed from the right gable end.
