Description

This sundial, located approximately 12 metres to the northwest of the tower of the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, dates from the late 18th century. It is made of dressed grey sandstone and features a circular base with four steps that have moulded nosings. Atop the base is a stubby Tuscan column supporting a circular copper dial plate. The dial plate is inscribed with the phrases: "Use well/these few bright/but ever fleetinge/hours" and "veni vide vale". Historical accounts indicate that £3 was paid for its installation in 1784, and in 1786, £1 3s. 0d. was paid for "a Dial piller". The dial itself appears to have been created in 1771, with payments recorded of £7 7s. 0d. for it and £3 3s. 0d. for the dial plate.
