The White House And The Smithy With Attached Blacksmiths Shop

The White House and The Smithy with attached blacksmith's shop is a pair of labourer's cottages and an attached smithy, dating from the mid-19th century. A central plastered datestone is inscribed with "WM". The cottages have roughcast rubblestone walls and a slate roof featuring a shared late 19th-century brick ridge stack from 1770. The building is two storeys high and has two multi-paned mid-19th-century metal casements with Gothic glazing. The ground floor windows are set under cambered heads, and there are entrances to the left and right through 19th-century ledged doors, each sheltered by 20th-century porches. Inside, both cottages retain massive beams, heavy joists, and late 19th-century cast iron ranges in their ground floor fireplaces. The blacksmith's shop is attached to the right end of The Smithy and is likely from the mid-19th century as well. It features random limestone rubble, a slate roof, and a brick end stack. The entrance is through double doors on the left, with a window and hatch on the right. The interior includes an anvil, two forges, pear-shaped bellows, two vices, and other equipment, and the shop is still in occasional use.
