Description

Clapper Farmhouse and attached farmbuildings date from the early to mid-19th century. The farmhouse is constructed of uncoursed limestone and conglomerate rubble, with a slate roof, a rubble-stone ridge stack with a brick capping and a red brick end stack to the right. It is a two-story building with an irregular arrangement of windows. The first floor has three mid-19th century metal casements with Gothic glazing. The ground floor has two ledged doors – one to the left of each ground floor window – and all ground floor openings have cambered heads, brick except for the one above the left-hand door, which is stone. A contemporary lean-to with a catslide roof extends from the rear.

Attached to the west is a cowhouse, under the same roof, the rear of which has been replaced with corrugated iron. It features a stable door under a cambered head. The interior of the cowhouse has a king post roof in two bays, with a hayloft over the right-hand bay.

A cowshed is attached to the south, with a corrugated iron roof. It has four doors with cambered heads and two eaves hatches. The cowshed's king post roof spans three bays, incorporating a brick partition wall between the first and second bays from the south. A loft for a granary is found in the first and third bays, while the second and third bays from the south are cowstalls.

Later 19th-century pigsties and a barn, located on the south and east sides of the farmyard, are not included in the listing. The farmhouse and attached ranges are depicted on the 1846 Enclosure Map.
