Description

This barn, located approximately 20 meters south of Bird Farmhouse, dates from the mid- to late 17th century and has undergone some later alterations. It is timber framed with red brick infill on the north side and west gable end, while the south side and east gable end are weatherboarded. The roof is made of corrugated iron. Originally, the barn had four bays, but the west bay has been demolished. The structure has two levels. The framing features two rectangular panels with short straight tension braces above a high brick plinth on the front, while the back wall has better-preserved framing. There are two stable doors on the right, with the right door accessed by external steps, and a wide inserted entrance on the left, which includes a segmental-headed doorway at the far left and an eaves hatch. Inside, the framing is visible on the back wall, which mirrors the front but is in better condition. There is a raised threshing floor in the center with space beneath it and a loft in the left bay. The single-purlin roof includes two Queen-strut trusses on the left with V-struts from the collar and two Queen-post trusses on the right. This barn is included for its group value, although Bird Farmhouse itself is not part of this listing.
