Description
Keepers Cottage is a house and store dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with flat coursed rubble pilasters, featuring a simple ashlar band that forms an entablature and a projecting eaves band that also serves as the base for simple gabled pediments and ashlar verges. The roofs are covered with plain tiles and have integral brick ridge stacks. The building has a long rectangular plan and forms one side of an open courtyard.
The exterior is two storeys high. On the courtyard side, there is a central simple pedimental gable that includes a brick-blocked roundel and a brick segmental-arched doorway. To the left, the house features a simple pedimented gable, two 2-light casements, and a 20th-century semi-dormer above 20th-century casements in brick segmental-arched openings. A 4-panelled front door is sheltered by an enclosed stone lean-to porch, all beneath a simple pedimented gable. To the right, there are brick segmental-arched openings and a higher gabled cross wing at the right end.
On the left gable end, there is a 20th-century 2-light casement set under a raised string course, with a 3-light casement below. The rear has plain stone rubble walls, with three dormers above 20th-century multi-pane casements.
Keepers Cottage is part of a group that includes the Estate Yard Cottages, Dovecote, Barn, and Cartshed, showcasing a complete example of early 19th-century planning of an estate village.
