Description
Blackberry Cottage is an early 19th-century cottage, with possible earlier origins, located in Dartmouth. The building has been subject to some modernisation. It is constructed of pebbledashed stone rubble and features end and rear lateral stacks with brick chimney shafts and some older chimney pots, topped with a slate roof.
The cottage has a double-depth plan, consisting of two rooms wide with a central passage and staircase. It stands two storeys tall with attics and has a symmetrical three-window front. The central doorway features a 20th-century part-glazed door beneath a contemporary monopitch-roofed porch. The windows are horned four-pane sashes with horizontal glazing bars. Above, there is a central dormer with a canted front that contains 20th-century casements without glazing bars, all under a hipped roof. The parallel roof of Blackberry Cottage is continuous with the roofs of the neighbouring cottages.
While the interior has not been inspected, it is likely to be of interest. The row of cottages at Ford is situated at the head of an old creek that was once an old mill pond, which was infilled in the early 19th century.
