Description
The dovecote at Estate Yard Cottages, now used as kennels and a store, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features plain hipped and gabled tiled roofs. The building has a square plan and serves as a focal point in the open side of a larger courtyard.
The exterior has three symmetrical sides, with simple pilasters that divide the wall face into three recessed panels, each containing a boarded door and loft openings topped with brick segmental-arched lintels. The fourth side is covered by a lean-to bay that has a gabled pediment featuring a roundel in the tympanum raised in the roof pitch. The hipped tiled roof is topped with a stone cupola that has four simple pedimented faces, each with three slits.
The dovecote is part of a group with the Estate Yard Cottages, Keepers Cottage, Barn, and Cartshed, showcasing a complete example of early 19th-century planning of an estate village.
