Description
Tollgate Cottage, formerly known as Burway Cottage, is a tollhouse located on Bromfield Road in Ludlow. It dates from the mid-19th century and has later additions. The building features painted brick and stone rubble with a plain tile roof, which has slate on the rear gables, and a tall brick stack at the back. It is two stories high and has a three-window range. On the left side, there is a 20th-century three-light casement window set in a stone rubble bay. To the right, there are two fixed lights with heavy crossed glazing bars in broad architraves. The central entrance has a 20th-century plank door, with a similar light to the right that includes a central mullion and casement, as well as a brick bay with similar lights. A pentice porch supported by rustic posts is present. The right return side has a similar light above 20th-century casements, and the left gable has a brick flue. At the rear, there are two 20th-century gable wings. Inside, the ground floor right features a corner fireplace, and the door and window to the right have been transposed.
