Description
The Turnpike is a tollhouse that has been converted into a cottage. It dates from the early 19th century, possibly earlier. The building features colourwashed brick and some flint, topped with an old plain tile roof. It is a single storey with an attic and has four bays, along with a 20th-century two-bay single storey extension added to the right. There are blocked doorways to the right of centre and at the left end, and three early 19th-century leaded casement windows with cambered heads, consisting of two and three lights. To the left of centre, there is a hipped dormer with a two-light casement. The roof is half-hipped and has an 18th-century centre ridge stack. The building was used as a tollhouse on the Winchester to Petersfield Turnpike starting in 1825.
