Description
This is a mid-18th century school building, originally founded in 1738 by a bequest in a will, with a further plaque commemorating 1860. Constructed of brick with tilehung gables and stone dressings, it has a plain tile roof. The original 18th-century section is a symmetrical 5-bay, 2-storey block, with a 19th-century schoolroom attached to the right and to the rear. The 18th-century building features a central doorway with an 18th-century doorcase, a rectangular fanlight (replaced with a 20th-century door), and a timber flat hood supported by brackets. It has four early 19th-century cross windows with cast iron casements and gauged brick arches; above these are five smaller, similarly styled windows. The roof has overhanging rafters and bargeboarded, tilehung gables. Brick stacks are located on the rear side, either side of the outshot. The attached 19th-century schoolroom has a large, three-light, two-transom window with cast iron casements, set within a rendered brick arch and stone sill. Small pointed windows are positioned above this. Plaque detailing is present on either side of the gable end. The roof features plain bargeboards and a cupola vent.
