Description

The Unicorn Inn is an inn with origins dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, with later 18th-century alterations. It features painted brick and timber-frame construction, topped with a plain tile roof that has two ridge lines. At the rear, there is an 18th-century brick chimney stack. The building is two stories high and has a four-window range. On the left side, there is a 20th-century four-over-eight sash window and a late 19th-century margin glazed sash window in a broad case, set within close studding. To the right, there are two more margin glazed sashes in moulded cases, which are positioned under segmental arches in painted brickwork, all beneath brick modillion eaves.

A blocked doorway can be found to the right, set under a gauged brick arch. There are also two 20th-century canted bay windows and an entrance to a passageway framed with a moulded surround and topped with a moulded bressummer. Inside the passageway, there is an exposed stop-chamfered ceiling beam, along with timber-framing from the 16th and 17th centuries, which includes brick infill. A 20th-century battened plank door is set in an earlier frame to the right, and there are two 20th-century casement windows above a reused joist acting as a lintel at the rear. The building has 19th and 20th-century wings at the rear, featuring 20th-century windows and a small 19th-century brick chimney stack.

The interior of the ground floor showcases much of the exposed timber-framing and ceiling beams, while the first floor also retains exposed ceiling beams and timber-framing on the left side.
