Description

The sundial, located approximately 17 metres north of the chancel of the Church of Saint Mary in Market Drayton, is a churchyard cross that has been converted into a sundial. It likely dates from the 14th or 15th century. The structure is made of dressed grey sandstone and features a base composed of four octagonal stone steps. The columnar shaft has a splayed base and a moulded capital, topped with a copper dial plate and gnomon. The dial plate is inscribed with the phrases: "TIME IS SHORT / ETERNITY IS LONG" and "WHILE YOU HAVE TIME / DO GOOD". Additionally, there is a copper plate affixed to the base of the shaft, which reads: "IN MEMORY OF S.P. BORN AD 1806 DIED AD 1885 / THIS SUN DIAL WAS RESTORED AD 1900".
