Description
This building, originally a house, is now divided into two cottages, with part of No. 2 functioning as a shop. It dates back to the 17th century and was remodeled and extended in the late 18th century, with further additions and alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exterior features painted brick and uncoursed rubble, likely replacing an earlier timber frame, and has a steep-pitched slate roof that runs at right angles to the street. The original two-bay plan was extended in the late 18th century by a single-bay addition to the north. The building is two storeys high with an attic, and has late 20th-century casements throughout, including three below the eaves and three on the ground floor. There are two gabled eaves dormers on the right and one flat-roofed dormer on the left. No. 4 has a late 20th-century stable door, while No. 2 has a glazed door in the center. A small red brick internal end stack is located on the left side. The gable facing the road features a 20th-century shop front with contemporary casements above and projecting purlin ends.
Inside, No. 4 contains a timber-framed partition wall shared with No. 2, which has light panels. The gable end upstairs has square panels and long straight tension braces, while a partly infilled inglenook fireplace is located in the corner of the ground-floor room. An exposed roof truss of the Queen-strut type forms the division between the two cottages.
