Description

No. 35 and Nos. 1 and 2 Mansion Cottages comprise a house, now a shop and dwelling, alongside two attached cottages. The house dates to the early 18th century and has undergone alterations, while the cottages are likely of 17th century or earlier origin, also altered.

No. 35 is a brick building covered in white-painted pebble-dash, set on a flint plinth painted black, with a red tile roof. It has a rectangular, single-depth plan, originally perhaps three bays but now showing two. The building is two storeys high, with a square shop window in the first bay and a doorway in the second. Above are two twelve-pane sash windows, and a chimney is located at the left gable. The right-hand gable wall has an inserted ground-floor door and renewed gable weatherboarding incorporating a small attic window. Interior alterations, taking place at the time of a 1988 survey, exposed a spine beam, wall-plates, some studs with brick nogging, all of light scantling.

Nos. 1 and 2 Mansion Cottages are attached at right angles to the rear of No. 35, with a timber frame filled with white-painted brick nogging, a red tile roof, and brick chimneys. They have a single-depth, linear plan and two low storeys with four windows at the first floor. The exposed timber framing includes parts of two wall posts, rails, studs, and one upbrace near the junction with No. 35, all of light scantling. No. 1 features a narrow modern chimney stack in the centre of the front wall, adjacent to which is a shallow bay window at ground floor and a single-light casement window above with diamond panes. Further right is an inserted doorway and a casement window above. The front wall of No. 2 is stepped back in the second bay, with a small casement window on each floor in the first bay, and a fixed window at ground floor and a two-light casement window above in the second. A lean-to extension at the right-hand end accommodates the doorway. A large chimney stack rises from the rear slope of No. 1, while No. 2 has a ridge chimney. A two-storey wing is an addition to the rear of No. 2. The interior of the cottages was not inspected.
