Description

This is a late 18th-century tomb chest located in the angle of the north transept and north aisle of the Church of St Mary and St Nicholas. It commemorates William Denne Esq., a London banker who died in 1786. The monument is constructed from limestone and stands on a rectangular base of two steps. The lower step has the remnants of former railings, while the upper step has a continuous moulded edge. Architectural details include a moulded plinth, pilaster strips with horizontal fluting, and raised oval side and end panels with fan spandrels. The lid has a moulded edge. An inscribed epitaph is on the north-facing panel, and a carved shield depicting a stag is on the west-facing panel.
