Description

This is a group of nine monuments located on the north side of the chancel of the Church of St Mary and St Nicholas in Leatherhead. The group consists of five tomb chests and four headstones, two of which have footstones, arranged in an area approximately 12 metres square. Most of the monuments date from the later 18th century and are made of limestone.

The tomb chests share a common design featuring moulded plinths, rusticated corners, and lids with moulded edges. They are arranged in two short rows from north to south and commemorate the following individuals:

  1. William Stone (died 1787) and Hannah Stone (died 1798)
  2. Mrs Mary Peter (died 1771) and Thomas Peter (died 1779)
  3. George Cooper (died 1852)
  4. Thomas Peter Stone (died 1837)
  5. Mrs Elizabeth Wood (died 1777)

Between the second and fifth tomb chests are two headstones:

  1. Sarah Goddard (died 1774): features a scrolled top with a carving of a draped chalice and has a footstone at the rear.
  2. Ann Peter (died 1769): small headstone with a wavy top and an elaborate carving that includes two cherubs, along with an inscription adorned with flourishes.

At the north-east corner of the group are the remaining two headstones, both with footstones at the rear, commemorating:

  1. Richard Hurst (died 1751): has an elaborately shaped and carved top featuring an hourglass.
  2. John Hurst (died 1791): features a shaped top with a carving of an hourglass and foliation.
