Description
The Cottage is a house that likely dates from the 17th century and was remodeled in the late 17th or early 18th century. It has been altered over time. The building has a single-depth plan that is almost rectangular, with an extension at the right-hand end. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and has a red tile roof. The house is two storeys high and has three bays. The symmetrical facade features a slightly projecting central section, a plinth, corner pilasters with moulded caps, and three-course bands over both floors in each bay, with the central bands being moulded. There is a parapet with flat coping. The central doorway has a door with six fielded panels, a simple moulded architrave, and a prominent moulded cornice supported by consoles. All the windows are 12-pane sashes with exposed boxes and gauged brick heads. There are end-wall chimneys located behind the ridge. The left gable wall includes a three-course band, a tall two-light casement window on the first floor, and a slate-hung gable with an inserted attic window. At the right-hand end, there is a short extension of two low storeys, which has a modern door at ground level, tile-hanging above, and a hipped roof. A small modern addition has been made to the front right-hand corner of this extension, but it is not of special interest. The rear and interior of the building were not inspected, but it is reported that the interior contains earlier fabric.
