Description
Little Duglands is an early 17th-century farmhouse, and it may incorporate elements of an earlier building. The eaves were raised in the late 18th century, with later additions and alterations carried out. The farmhouse is timber framed, possibly including cruck construction, with painted brick infill and a graded slate roof. It originally had a 3-unit baffle-entry plan, likely converted from an open-hall house. The building is two stories high. The front of the farmhouse has largely been replaced with brick, but retains three square panels below the original wall-plate in the centre. More complete timber framing, with irregular square and rectangular panels, is visible to the rear and at the raising of the eaves on both sides. The right gable end has a truncated, possible cruck truss, obscured by a 19th-century cowhouse, featuring a collar and tie beam. Roughly coursed sandstone rubble forms the ground floor of the left gable end, with corrugated iron cladding above. Three mid-19th-century casement windows are directly below the eaves, while the ground floor has a fixed-light window to the far left. A 3-light 20th-century metal casement window is to the left of the plank front door, which is under a 20th-century gabled open porch. A red brick ridge stack is located directly above the entrance, and a subsidiary stack sits in the front left corner. A 19th-century single-story sandstone lean-to extends to the rear, while a 19th-century red brick cowhouse is attached to the right gable end. The interior was not accessible for inspection during a resurvey in October 1986, but it is likely to be of interest. The building is also known as Little Ducklands.
