Description

Red House is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 17th century and has an early 19th-century malthouse attached to the left, along with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring a chamfered red sandstone block plinth and stone angle quoins for the house, while the former malthouse is made of red sandstone blocks. The roof is slate throughout, with coped verges on carved stone kneelers at the former malthouse.

The structure is two storeys tall and has a former gable-lit attic. There is a moulded stone string course at the first floor level, along with short string courses above the first-floor and attic windows on the right gable end. The windows throughout are 20th-century casements, with two on each floor of the house featuring segmental heads, and two on the first floor of the former malthouse. The right gable end has segmental-headed windows on each floor, although the attic window has been infilled. There is also an infilled opening on the left gable end at the first floor.

Entrance to the house is through 20th-century double doors located immediately to the left of a 20th-century flat-roofed addition at the far left of the house. A roughly central integral lateral stack is found on the back wall, along with a 20th-century brown brick ridge stack at the centre of the former malthouse. The interior was not accessible during the resurvey in October 1986, but it is expected to be of interest. The small 20th-century addition is not considered to have special architectural significance.
