Description
New Mills Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with its eaves raised in the late 18th century, along with later additions and alterations. It features a timber frame with painted brick infill set on an uncoursed limestone rubble plinth, topped with a machine tile roof. The original layout is a baffle-entry plan consisting of three framed bays, with the eaves raised in the late 18th century. The building is two storeys high. The framing includes rectangular panels, with two extending from the cill to the original wall-plate, supported by short straight tension braces. Above these, there is one rectangular panel featuring raking struts from the tie beam to the principal rafter at the right gable end.
The mid-19th century windows include three horizontal sliding sashes positioned directly below the eaves. On the ground floor, there is one casement window and one horizontal sliding sash, the latter possibly occupying the position of the original entrance, to the left, and a six-paned vertical sash to the right of a four-panel door. A brown brick ridge stack is located immediately to the left. The interior could not be inspected during the resurvey in November 1985, but it is likely to be of interest. Attached to the left gable end is a mid-19th century cowhouse, which has been partly converted for domestic use, though it is not considered to have special architectural interest.
