Description
The former lead smelting works, located approximately 60 meters northeast of The Smelt House, is a late 19th-century building that is now disused. It is constructed from roughly coursed limestone rubble with red brick dressings and features a graded slate roof. The building has two levels and includes two segmental-headed openings on the lower left, a tall rectangular opening to the left of center, and a segmental-headed doorway in the center with a similar but damaged window opening to the right. There is a wide entrance on the far right that has been heightened due to the removal of the original arch. A gabled wooden louvre is positioned to the left of center, with a red brick ridge stack immediately to its right. The left gable end features a wide segmental-headed entrance flanked by tall segmental-headed windows.
Inside, the building is divided into two parts by full-height brick and rubblestone cross walls, with the rubblestone wall displaying round-headed arches on two levels. The lower level has rectangular openings with wooden lintels flanking the round-headed arch, while a similar round-headed arch is present at the upper level of the brick wall. The left side of the rubblestone cross wall features a king-post roof and an original brick floor. No equipment remains in the building. The Smelt House itself is not included in this listing.
