Description

The former smelter sheds at Upper Bank Works are a factory building constructed from squared brown rubble stone with brick dressings and an asbestos sheet roof. The structure consists of a main range to the north and a narrower range to the south that projects forward, which is linked to a second range that was entirely rebuilt in the 20th century, retaining some stonework on the corner. The larger building to the north features large vents that have been infilled with decorative brickwork, along with three large roundels in the gable above four large arched openings, all surrounded by brick. The ground floor includes a blocked arched opening to the right of center and three broad openings with iron lintels, while quoins are present on the left corner. The narrower range to the right also projects forward and has a pair of small arched blocked openings in the end gable, displaying rougher detailing and quoins on the left corner. The stonework originally extended continuously to the building on the right, which has now mostly been replaced. Although not inspected, it is reported that the building has been converted for modern factory use.
