Description

The Severn Bridge Junction Signal Box is a signal box built in 1903, designed in the London and North Western Railway type 4 style for the London and North Western and Great Western Railway Joint Committee. It is constructed of brick with a glazed timber upper storey and features a gabled Welsh slate roof. The building has a narrow rectangular plan and stands three storeys tall, comprising a six-bay range that houses the locking room with an interlocking frame and an operating floor above. The ground-floor windows are blocked, while the first floor has small segmental-arched one-light windows set in recessed panels with dentilled cornicing. There are brackets supporting a walkway around the cabin of the operating floor, which features horizontally sliding sash windows. The entry is located at the gable end. Inside, there is an interlocking frame with 180 levers, designed by the London and North Western Railway, and block instruments on a shelf. This signal box is part of a significant group of buildings that includes Shrewsbury Railway Station and Crewe Junction Signal Box, all constructed as part of a single improvement scheme for Shrewsbury Station.
