Description

The railway signal box, built in 1880 for the Great Western Railway by contractors Mackenzie and Holland, is a type 3 signal box that was refitted in 1911. It features red brick, a timber frame, and a weatherboard exterior with a Welsh slate roof. The brick locking room has two arched windows with small paned cast iron frames. Above this, there is horizontal boarding with continuous glazing at the front, which includes seven windows, each with six panes, two of which slide. One gable end has a timber stair (the lower flight has been removed) leading to a gabled porch, alongside three windows, one of which slides; the other gable has four windows, two of which slide. The gables have bargeboards, and the entrance gable retains its spike finial. The rear wall is partly brick where the chimney was located and has one window. The interior no longer contains the 25 lever locking frame from 1911 or the large gate wheel.

Baschurch signal box is situated on the Shrewsbury and Chester Railway, which opened in 1848. The line was taken over by the Great Western Railway in 1854, which ordered this signal box. The Mackenzie and Holland type 3 was in use from the 1870s until the company was taken over by Westinghouse in 1921, and it was supplied to more than twenty railway companies. Adjacent to the box is a level crossing with automatic gates, and opposite is the old crossing keeper's house. The listed former station and pumphouse are also nearby, giving the signal box strong group value with these structures.
