Description

Birchgrove is a disused farmhouse dated 1705, with mid-19th century additions and alterations. It features painted red brick and large red sandstone blocks at the ground floor of the 19th century addition. The roof is plain tile at the front and slate at the rear and on the addition. There is a red brick ridge stack slightly to the right of center and an integral end stack on the addition. The building has an L-plan layout, consisting of a two-room lobby-entry main range and a full-height 19th century addition to the rear on the left, which is indicated by a straight joint.

The farmhouse is two stories high, with a continuous floor band and deep boxed eaves at the front, and a dentilled eaves cornice at the rear and on the 19th century addition. It has segmental-headed three-light leaded casements, although the lower left window has had its leaded lights replaced by plate glass. These windows are positioned on either side of a mid-19th century flat-roofed brick porch, which features a contemporary four-panel outer door with a rectangular barred overlight and an inner segmental-arched doorway with panelled reveals. Above the porch is a moulded datestone inscribed with "H/TE/1705".

Inside, the front ground-floor rooms have panelled window shutters. The first floor has wide-boarded oak floorboards and late 18th century or early 19th century cast-iron fireplaces in the left and right rooms.
