Description
Crewe Junction Signal Box, built between 1902 and 1903, was constructed for the London and North Western and Great Western Railway Joint Committee. The structure is made of brick with a weatherboarded top storey and features a slate roof. It stands four storeys tall, with the lower levels housing the locking room and interlocking mechanism, and the operating floor above. The building has a six-window range of small casements on the first and second floors, various doors on the ground floor, and two three-light casements on the top floor facing the track. The operating floor is distinguished by a full-length range of horizontal sliding sash windows and a doorway accessed by a flight of steps. There is also a full-length projecting gangway, which is mirrored on the gable ends along with the windows. Inside, the signal box contains a 120-lever interlocking frame, along with associated block shelves and working instruments. This signal box is part of an exceptional group of buildings that includes Shrewsbury Railway Station and Severn Bridge Junction Signal Box, all constructed as part of a single improvement scheme for Shrewsbury Station.
