Description
The Gala Bingo Club, formerly the Granada Cinema, is a bingo club built in 1937 by architect Cecil Masey, with interiors designed by Theodore Komisarjevsky. The building features a combination of brown brick and white tile, accented with stone dressings and a parapeted roof, showcasing a classical style. It stands two to three storeys high, with a narrow tall frontispiece that includes four giant Corinthian columns in antis, flanked by pilasters, all supporting an entablature. The blank attic is topped with an elaborate cornice decorated with acanthus leaves. The front has a two-storey range of four metal windows set within a portico, and there are glazed double doors on the ground floor.
Inside, much of the original detailing remains intact. The foyer is adorned with Corinthian pilasters and a modillion cornice, along with balustrading for the balconies and engraved mirror tympana above the arches. The auditorium features a Corinthian aedicule leading to the stage, with large decorated panels on either side, which are topped with balustrades and elaborate pierced screens, with pilasters in between that are decorated with arabesques. The ceiling includes shallow beam and coffering decoration arranged in a circular pattern, and there is a curving balcony.
