Description

Riggs Hall, located to the rear of the library, is a house that was formerly part of Shrewsbury School and dates back to the early 15th century, although it has been extensively restored. The building features a timber frame set on a high sandstone plinth and has a plain tiled roof. It is two storeys tall, with the main range consisting of a hall and a solar block, along with a cross wing that may have been added later. The timber framing includes square panels with large braces on the rear elevation, and some close studding on the inner elevation and in the cross wing, which also features ogival braces. Inside, there are cambered tie beams decorated with vine scrolls and jowelled posts with arched braces at the gable. The ground floor has been largely altered due to its incorporation into the library, with infill panels removed to create timber-framed screen walls on the inner faces. The upper storeys are fitted with renewed 4-light casement windows. Riggs Hall was one of the original buildings of Shrewsbury School when it was founded in 1552.
