Description
The Old School House is a building that was once used as a school. It dates from the 17th century and was altered and extended in the early 18th century, with further modifications made in the mid-19th century. The structure features part timber framing with brick and rendered infill on a rubble base, as well as some handmade brickwork. It has a plain tiled roof with a large brick ridge stack.
The building has a T-plan layout, with the original section consisting of two framed bays aligned north to south. There is a large intersecting brick range on the west side, which includes a substantial chimney that likely indicates a lobby-entry plan. The building is single storey with an attic and a cellar.
The timber framing consists of three rows of square panels from the sill to the wall plate, and it features collar and tie-beam trusses with struts and V-struts in the apex. On the south front elevation, the main brick range includes a 19th-century two-light casement window on the ground floor and a ledged and battened door. The gable end of the older section to the right has a 20th-century rectangular window on the ground floor and an attic window. It is noted that the building was used as a school until the mid-20th century.
