Description
The Old School House, formerly known as the British Railways (Western Region) Engineer's Office, is located on School Gardens in Shrewsbury. This building dates back to the 16th century and was refronted around 1818 in a neo-Tudor style by architects E and JH Haycock for the headmaster, Dr Samuel Butler. It features painted brickwork and a plain tiled roof, standing two storeys tall with an advanced gable and a projecting wing to the right. The entrance is located in the angle of the building and has a hoodmould over the archway, while to its left is a full-height canted bay topped with an embattled parapet. The upper windows are round-arched and have mullions with one or two lights, also featuring hoodmoulds. The projecting wing has a single-light mullion on the ground floor and two lights above. Inside, remnants of the earlier structure can be found, including an early 17th-century staircase with bulbous splat balusters.
