Description
These offices, originally school masters’ houses for Shrewsbury School, date to 1825, though they may incorporate an earlier structure. The building is constructed of brick with a plain tiled roof and is in a Neo-Tudor style. It is two storeys high with attics, featuring a six-window range organized as a series of gables and a narrow central section, with the outer bays projecting forward. There are two principal doorways with four-centred arches and hood moulds, and a narrower doorway to the right. The windows are mullioned, with two round-arched lights and hood moulds on both floors. The narrow central bay contains a single lancet window and a dormer, displaying the initials SB, representing Samuel Butler, headmaster of the school between 1798 and 1836. Axial star-shaped stacks are present. A full-height square bay window with a half-hipped roof and paired sash windows on the side elevation was added in the late 19th century.
