Description
16 and 17 Castle Street is a shop building dating from the early 19th century, featuring a facade from the 20th century. The exterior has a mock timber design over brick and is topped with a plain tiled roof. The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The shop front consists of three 4-centred arched bays, with a central doorway that has carved spandrels and leaded upper lights in the windows. There is a late 20th-century fascia and canopy above the shop front.
The upper windows are leaded casements with two lights, flanking a central window with six lights, and there is a two-light casement in the central attic gable. The mock timber-framing features close studding with ogee arched braces, and the gable has enriched barge-boards.
On the return elevation to School Gardens, there is a brick wing that extends back from the street block. This section is painted brick and has three storeys, with inserted double doors and a window on the ground floor, and 12-pane sash windows above, including 20-pane windows in the attic, all with flat-arched heads. A projecting square oriel window at the first floor has leaded upper lights and a carved floral frieze, along with a dentilled eaves band.
