Description
1 and 1a Park Street is a pair of houses that have been converted into a public house. They date from around 1600 and feature 20th-century windows and a rebuilt ground floor. The structure is timber-framed with rendered square panels, close studding beneath the first-floor windows, straight braces, and an old tiled roof.
The building consists of two framed bays and stands three storeys tall. The first floor was likely jettied before the rebuilding, while the second floor is jettied and includes a moulded bressumer supported by three carved scroll brackets. Above, there are four small jettied gables featuring cusped and concave lozenge-decorated queen-post trusses, along with a continuous moulded bressumer with small brackets. The second floor has three three-light leaded casement windows from the 20th century, while the first and ground floors each have two five-light leaded oriel windows, flanking a pair of 20th-century half-glazed doors.
Inside, there is a 19th-century Neo-Jacobean dog-leg staircase. This building is part of a significant group with Nos. 13A, 14, and 15 Market Place.
