Description
The Shambles Public House is a house that has been converted into a public house. It dates from the early 16th century and was restored in the later 20th century. The building features large square-panelled timber-framing with some curved braces above, and the infill is exposed plaster. It has a thatched roof and consists of a range of four units in series. Notably, the roof over two (possibly three) of these units is smoke-blackened, indicating that the building may have originally contained various self-contained units, possibly workshops. The structure has two storeys and a stack at the left end of the ridge.
The windows are arranged irregularly, with three on the first floor and four on the ground floor, all of which are 20th-century wooden casements. There is a boarded door to the right of centre. The rear of the building has extensive later 20th-century extensions. Inside, the ground floor has been much altered, but some framed partitions remain, as well as the side-purlin roof with curved wind braces and queen posts over the collar. At the time of inspection, smoke-blackened thatch was still visible on the underside of the roof, along with sooted principals and rafters.
